Robert Trent Jones Course at Palmetto Dunes
Golf week magazine listed the Robert Trent Jones Course at Palmetto Dunes Hilton Head Oceanfront Resort as one of the finest golf experiences available in the entire southeast. This is no surprise to anyone who has had a chance to explore this breathtaking layout.
There are 3 courses available to guests that come to the Palmetto Dunes Golf Resort. Besides Robert Trent Jones there is the George Fazio and Arthur Hills.
All of the Hilton Head Island courses are 18 holes and each one offers a unique opportunity for players to test their skills. However, if you only have time for one round I would suggest that you start with the vivid natural beauty and laid back elegance of the Robert Trent Jones course.
Although the course was built in 1967 there was an extensive renovation project that was overseen by Roger Rulewich, who was mentored by Jones. The total cost for the updates and improvements totaled in excess of $3 million dollars, and nothing was left to chance. All of the tees, greens, and bunkers were reworked and restructured with the players needs in mind.
Even the fairways and the drainage system were overhauled and improved to exacting standards. Many golfers had offered an opinion that the original Hilton Head Island golf course design was no longer quite as challenging as some of the newer sites in the area.
Rulewich kept these comments in mind. He was determined to maintain the integrity of the original vision but still managed to create some new excitement at the same time. The results of his efforts have been pretty amazing. After the project was completed, this Palmetto Dunes Golf oceanfront treasure was honored as the 2003 National Golf Course of the Year by the SC Board of Directors for the NGCOA.
There are two oceanfront holes located on the Palmetto Dunes Hilton Head Island golf course and one of them is the 10th hole, which is the signature for the Robert Trent Jones course. This is a Par 5 with an unparalleled view of the Atlantic Ocean.
Due to the perfect combination of challenging play and scenic beauty, this course was chosen to host the 2nd round of action in the 27th annual Hilton Head Island Golf Celebrity Tournament. The coastal Lowcountry setting makes this an enjoyable course for golfers during any month of the year and a superb Hilton Head golf vacation.
You may not need them in the winter but during the humid, southern summers, the air conditioned golf carts are a nice touch and offered at the Palmetto Dunes Golf Resort. The clubhouse has a good assortment of equipment as well as rentals if you need them.
The onsite restaurant provides a break from the action, and you can always wander off to the beach to refresh and relax after 18 holes of fun in the sun on your Hilton Head golf vacation.
Palmetto Dunes Hilton Head Island Golf Resort offers a wide range of accommodations from one-bedroom condos to four-bedroom villas within the 1800-acre resort.
